The Amazon Canada First Novel Award recognizes the outstanding achievement of a Canadian first-time novelist. The First Novel Award has launched the careers of some of Canada’s most beloved novelists, including Michael Ondaatje, Joan Barfoot, Michael Redhill, and David Bezmozgis. The Shirley Jackson Award recognizes outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic.

“We knew that David had created something special after reading a first draft of the The Bone Mother. Having the importance of this novel recognized by both the genre and literary worlds is groundbreaking,” said Sandra Kasturi, Publisher, ChiZine Publications. “We couldn’t be more thrilled . . . well, we could actually, if the book wins! But these nominations alone have made our entire year.”

The Bone Mother was written by Winnipeg-Born David Demchuk who has been writing for theatre, film, television, radio, and other media for more than thirty years. His publications include the short-fiction cycle Seven Dreams, and the Lewis Carroll adaptation Alice in Cyberspace, and appearances in the anthologies Making, Out!, Outspoken and Canadian Brash. The Bone Mother is Demchuk’s first novel.

“These are rare honours,” said Demchuk. “I’m overwhelmed at the support I’ve received from the Canadian literary community and from my peers in speculative fiction. It’s tremendously gratifying and validating, even more so when I consider the level of achievement by my fellow nominees. I really couldn’t be happier.”

The Amazon Canada First Novel Award winner will be announced on May 22, 2018 in Toronto, ON. The 2017 Shirley Jackson Awards will be presented on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the Readercon 29 Conference on Imaginative Literature, in Quincy, Massachusetts.
