ChiZine’s The Bone Mother Selected for Giller Prize Longlist

First Ever Longlist Appearance for Author David Demchuk and ChiZine Publications

PETERBOROUGH, ON, September 22, 2017 – ChiZine Publications (CZP) title The Bone Mother, by first-time novelist David Demchuk, is the first horror title to appear on the Giller longlist in the history of the award. This selection also represents the first time that a ChiZine Publications title has been selected by the Giller Prize jury.

“The impact of both a horror novel and a smaller genre press breaking this boundary cannot be overstated. This is huge not only for us but for Canadian genre titles across the board,” said Sandra Kasturi, Publisher, ChiZine Publications. “We are thrilled that David’s amazing book is getting the recognition it deeply deserves.”

The Bone Mother was written by Winnipeg-Born David Demchuk who has been writing for theatre, film, television, radio, and other media for more than thirty years. His publications include the short-fiction cycle Seven Dreams and the Lewis Carroll adaptation Alice in Cyberspace, and appearances in the anthologies Making, Out!, Outspoken and Canadian Brash. The Bone Mother is Demchuk’s first novel.

“I’m simply thrilled,” said Demchuk. “The Bone Mother was an unusual and challenging book from its inception. I’m hugely grateful to ChiZine Publications for taking a chance on me. And I’m deeply honoured by this recognition from the Giller Prize jury.”

The Bone Mother is a series of interwoven mythological retellings of Eastern Europe’s most terrifying mythical creatures set among the villages of eastern Europe on the eve of the Second World War. The novel was released by ChiZine Publications in July 2017.
